Massage Therapy FAQs in Portland OR

Massage Therapy in Portland OR

Here at Dr. Samantha Stuart, DC, we offer massage therapy in Portland for the treatment of back, neck and body pain for Portland. Here are some of the questions we receive from our new massage clients.

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a type of body work that utilizes long hand strokes with varying pressure. The goal of the treatment is to relax muscles, ligaments and soft tissues. Massages also reduce tension headaches and migraines.

Do I have to undress for my massage sessions at your chiropractor’s office?

It depends on the massage. Localized massages and chair massages do not require the individual to undress. Total body massages at our chiropractor’s office require removing the outer layer of clothing, shoes, socks and jewelry. Most individuals opt to leave their undergarments on for their own personal comfort. A sheet is used to maintain modesty during the massage.

How long does the massage last?

Massages typically last between 30 and 60 minutes.

What types of massage do you offer?

We offer several different types of massage, including Swedish, deep tissue and sports massage. Swedish massages are very relaxing. They utilize a light pressure and long strokes to relax muscles, ligaments and soft tissues.

Deep tissue massages use medium to firm pressure in order to massage the deeper layers of the muscles and soft tissues. These massages are great for individuals that want knots and tight spots worked out. Deep tissue massages also help to break up scar tissue.

Sports massages use medium to firm pressure just like deep tissue massages. The difference is that these massages are more targeted in order to work on specific trouble spots. Common areas include the lower back, neck, shoulders, feet and calves.

Does massage therapy benefit chiropractic care?

Massage therapy does benefit chiropractic care. When massages are combined with our other treatment options, individuals notice a dramatic reduction in pain and faster healing times. This is because inflammation is reduced, sore muscles are relaxed and oxygenations and blood flow to the muscles is increased.

How soon can I expect pain relief?

Pain relief after a massage is immediate. Most individuals notice a dramatic reduction in lower back, neck and leg pain. They also experience less overall joint and body pain. Athletes who receive regular massages notice faster recovery times after workouts and experience fewer injuries. The benefits of massage are also cumulative. Individuals that receive multiple massages a month experience increased flexibility, lower pain levels and fewer headaches. Receiving regular massages promotes mental wellbeing. Individuals with depression and anxiety notice fewer symptoms. Massages also reduce stress and lower the levels of stress hormones in the blood.
